पिछ्ले दिनो मैं कुछ निजी कार्यवश डॉ0 गोविंद माधव के यहाँ गया हुआ था। वे उस समय अपने कम्प्यूटर पर स्व0 डॉ0 बरमेश्वर प्रसाद की जीवनी पर कार्यरत थे । उन्हों ने बताया कि जीवनी साहित्य के सृजन-सम्पादन का यह आयोजन डॉ0 उमेशप्रसाद........................औषधि विभाग, रिम्स, राँची की संकल्पना पर हो रहा है। तभी मुझे ज्ञात हुआ कि डॉ0 उमेश बरमेश्वर बाबू के सुपुत्र हैं।                         
   “अ वर्दी सन ऑव अ वर्दी फादर्।“ मेरे मुँह से सहसा निकल पड़ा, क्या संयोग है पिता ने जिस जीवन को युवावस्था में निराशा के गर्त से उबार कर जीवनरण के लिए सज्ज किया था उन्ही के सुयोग्य पुत्र ने उस जिंदगी की डोर को संध्याबेला में टूटने से बचा कर कर्मक्षेत्र में और कुछ वर्ष सक्रिय रहने के योग्य बना दिया। मेरी स्मृति के पन्ने आप से आप पलटने लगे। 
                                                           इस विवरण को एक कहानी कहें या संस्मरण इसका निर्णय पाठकों पर छोड़ते हुए हम चित-सूत्र को वर्तमान से अतीत प्रांगण में पहुंचने का माध्यम बनाते हैं। सन 2009 के दिसम्बर का महीना था। मैं नासिका के रक्तस्राव Epistaxis की गम्भीरावस्था में रिम्स लाया गया था। मुझे उस समय रिम्स में अध्ययनरत गोविंद माधव ने हीं यहाँ लाया था। रिम्स पँहुचने के पूर्व बीमारी की चरमावस्था में मैं लम्बी बेहोसी में भी जा चुका था। तब मुझे ऐसा विश्वास हो चुका था कि अब मेरे अंतिम पड़ाव की दुरी चंद सांसों भर की है। पर ऐसा नहीं हुआ। डॉ0 उमेश प्रसाद के कुशल निर्देशन में इलाज के बाद पुनर्जीवन प्राप्त कर मैं आज उम्र के आठवें दशक की दहलीज पर दाखिल हूँ और अभी स्वस्थ एवं उद्यमशील हूँ। अस्तु इस प्रसंग को यहीं विराम देते हुए मैं आपको सुदूर अतीत के स्मृतिलोक में ले चलता हूँ। यहाँ हम मिलते हैं डॉ0 बरमेश्वर प्रसाद से जिन्हें उस समय बरमेश्वर बाबू के नाम से लोकप्रियता हासिल थी। आज से 35-36  साल पुरानी बात है। तब मेरी युवावस्था थी और मैं चार संतानो का पिता बन चुका था। दूसरे शब्दों में, दुनियादारी का गुरुतर भार मेरे कंधे पर आ चूका था और मुझे जीवन या कहें स्वस्थ जीवन की वाजिब जरूरत थी। विडंबना कहिए कि उस अवस्था में लंबी अस्वस्था के कारण मैं जीवन से ही निराश हो चुका था। मेरे अंदर असमय कालकवलित हो जाने की प्रबल आशंका घर कर चुकी थी।

     उन दिनो राँची आर0 एम0 सी0 एच0 के औषधि विभागाध्यक्ष डॉ0 बरमेश्वर बाबू का बड़ा नाम यश था। कोई उन्हे भारत का सबसे बड़ा डॉक्टर बताता तो कोई एशिया फेम का फिजिशियन कहता। मेरे स्वजन शुभेच्छु इलाज के लिए मुझे उनके ही पास जाने का परामर्श दे रहे थे। 
                                                             वह दुर्गापूजा के त्योहार का समय थ। सर्वत्र भक्तिमय वातावरण। सार्वजनिक उत्साह और अवकाश के दिन। मैं अपने अनुज के साथ बरमेश्वर बाबू के आवास में पहुँच गया। आतुर के चित रहे ना चेतू...........पर्व त्योहार की व्यस्तता का कुछ भी ख्याल नहीं किया। कहावत है, अ हेल्दि माइंड इन हेल्दि बडी। जाहिर है लम्बी रुग्णता के कारण मेरा तन ही नहीं मन भी रुग्ण तो था ही। मैं अपनी ही दुश्चिंताओं में डूबा हुआ बुलावे की प्रतीक्षा में बैठा था। संयोग से लम्बी प्रतीक्षा नहीं करनी पड़ी। नाम धाम की औपचारिकता पुरी हुई तो मेरे जी में जी आया। “चलो डांट फटकार तो नहीं मिली कि इतने दिनों तक क्या कर रहे थे? अब दिखाने आए हैं...............?” मैं इत्मिनान हुआ।  “क्या हुआ पंडित जी! पुजे पाठ के दिन में बिमार पड़ गए?” ये आत्मीयता और सहानुभूति भरे शब्द डॉक्टर साहब के थे। सुनते ही क्षण मात्र में मेरा सारा कल्पित भय भाग गया। फिर तो मैं ने निर्भीक भाव से अपनी सारी व्यथा कथा सुना डाली। मुझे प्रेसक्रिप्सन थमाते हुए डॉक्टर साहेब ने शब्द कहे, “कहाँ मिश्रा जी! आपको तो कोई बिमारी है ही नहीं। जाइये पूआ-पूड़ी खाइये। दवा भी खा लीजिएगा। घूमते फिरते पूजापंडाल देखते निकल जाइये।“ उनके स्वर की सरलता और विनोदशीलता ने मुझे मुग्ध कर दिया। भूल ही गया कि मैं एक पुराना मरीज हूँ और इतने बड़े डॉक्टर के सामने हूँ।
                                                         बरमेश्वर बाबू के आवास से निकलते हुए मैं खुद को एकदम बदला हुआ महसूस कर रहा था। मेरे अंदर जिंदगी की उम्मीद जग गई थी। “इतने बड़े डॉक्टर ने कह दिया, कोई बीमारी नहीं है। “दवा दुकान पहुँचते हुए रास्ते में ही कामदेव ने भी मेरा मनोबल दृढ़ कर दिया था, आप अपने स्वास्थ्य को लेकर अब फालतू चिंता करना छोड़ दीजिए। जब डॉ0 बरमेश्वर प्रसाद कह दिए, आपको कोई बीमारी नहीं है तो नहीं है बीमारी। फिर भी दवा का बिल एकदम हीं छोटा देखकर मैं संदेह में पड़ गया। अपना असंतोष प्रकट करते हुए मैं नें जिज्ञासा की तो दवा दूकान वाले की झिड़की मिली, “ बरमेश्वर बाबू को दवा का नाम मालूम होता तभी तो सारी दवाएँ आपकी पुर्जी पर लिख देते? महाराज! जाइये जो दवा लिखे हैं सो खाइये। बरमेश्वर बाबू का पुर्जा है, बरमेश्वर बाबू का.............।“     
                                                          आज एक लम्बा समय गत हो चुका है। दुनियाँ के नियमानुसार आम आधि-व्याधियाँ जीवन में आईं-गईं। रोग दुख हुए-मिटे। 2009 की निराशा से उबर कर नवजीवन की प्राप्ति की चर्चा हो चुकी है। वह एक अतीत जो उस दिन डॉ0 गोविंद के आवास में सहसा जिवंत हो उठा- डॉ0 बरमेश्वर प्रसाद के असामयिक निधन से पुरजन-परिजन समेत न केवल सारी राँची बल्कि उनके शिष्यों और उपकृतों की पूरी दुनियाँ ही बिलख पड़ी थी। कहते हैं राँची में शोकाकुलों का इतना बड़ा सैलाब देखा नहीं गया थ। और भी ऐसी विभूतियों की इति अपूरणीय क्षति कही जाती है।    
                                                           बरमेश्वर बाबू ने कितनो को नई जिंदगी दी । कितनो की दुनियाँ आबाद की।कीर्तियस्य स जीवती, वे आज भी जीवित हैं।
“मैन लिव्स इन डीड्स नाट इन इयर्स” 
उस पुण्यात्मा के परिजन फुलें-फलें। दीर्घ जीवन प्राप्त कर सानंद लोक सेवा रत रहें।

वो मौत जो हेडलाइंस बन गयी थी कमोबेश सारे अखबारों की.

उनके अंतिम यात्रा की यादें: कुछ झलकियाँ

वो मौत जो सुर्ख़ियों में शामिल थी
वो आखिरी यात्रा जिसमे शामिल सारा शहर था
हजारो जोड़े आँखों की कतारें जिनके किनारों पे नमी मचल रही थी
अचानक से ही आपने  अपनी सांसो की यात्रा रोक कर आखिरी मंजिल का रुख कर लिया जब,
लगा कि  रफ़्तार थम सी गयी थी इस भागते दौड़ते शहर की भी
उन ग़मगीन लम्हों की कुछ झलकियाँ सहेज कर रखी गयी थी उनके पुत्र डॉ उमेश प्रसाद के द्वारा.

सुविख्यात चिकित्सक, राजेंद्र मेडिकल कॉलेज के चिकित्सा विभाग के प्रोफेसर एवं विभागाध्यक्ष तथा रांची विश्वविद्यालय के अभिषद के भूतपूर्व सदस्य, डॉ बरमेश्वर प्रसाद का दिनांक 15 -09-81 को संध्या समय आकस्मिक व असामयिक निधन का दुखद समाचार पाकर हम सभी शोक विह्वल हैं. डॉ प्रसाद को इस देश के चिकित्सा जगत में विशेष स्थान प्राप्त था. अपनी विद्वतापूर्ण एवं दक्ष चिकित्सा के माध्यम से मानव जाति की उन्होंने जो सेवा की , वो वन्दनीय है. हम सबका अहोभाग्य कि डॉ प्रसाद जैसे सुयोग्य चिकित्सक का सान्निध्य हमें प्राप्त था और यह हमारा दुर्भाग्य कि इस वरदान का लाभ हम इतने अल्प काल के लिए ही उत्जा सके. रांची विश्वविद्यालय परिवार के लिए यह अत्यंत दुखद एवं अपूर्णीय क्षति है. हम शोक विह्वल हैं और डॉ प्रसाद के शोक संतप्त परिवार के दुःख में सहभागी हैं. ईश्वर से प्रार्थना है कि वह डॉ प्रसाद की दिवंगत आत्मा को शांति तथा उनके शोक संतप्त परिवार को यह घोर दुःख सहने की शक्ति दे.

आज दिनांक 19-09-81 को सदर अस्पताल प्रांगन में 11 बजे दिन में डॉ राम इकबाल चौबे, सिविल सर्जन रांची  के अध्यक्षता में स्थानीय सदर अस्पताल , कार्यालय असैनिक शल्य चिकित्सक एवं मुख्य चि. प. एवं परिवार कल्याण विभाग के सभी अधिकारियों, चिकित्सकों एवं कर्मचारियों की एक शोक सभा हुई जिसमे स्वर्गीय डॉ बर्मेश्वर प्रसाद ,प्राध्यापक एवं विभागाध्यक्ष औषधि विभाग राजेंद्र चिकित्सा महाविद्यालय के असामयिक निधन पर दो मिनट का मौन धारण कर दिवंगत आत्मा को शान्ति के लिए प्रार्थना की गयी.
यह भी निर्णय लिया गया कि इस आलेख की एक प्रति शोक संतप्त परिवार को सांत्वना हेतु भेजी जाय तथा इसकी एक प्रति प्रेस में भी दिया जाए.

Prof. B. Prasad was one of the best product of this institution. He had been a good teacher and a very popular and able clinician.

The staff and the students of this college place on records their profound grief at the sudden death of Prof. Barmeshwar prasad, and pray of God that his soul may rest in peace.

It is resolved that a copy of the resolution be sent to the bereaved family.

A personal appreciation

An article published in the special issue of CAMPUS-the college magazine of RMCH.

(We received this anonymous article in our office on 9th sept 81. a few days before the cruel fate stuck prof. B Prasad)

Every RMC graduate knows that Dr Barmeshwar prasad is one of the most famous teachers this medical college has ever possessed. He is a superb lecturer, with a remarkable gift of the gab, who instructs, stimulates, charms generation after generation of medical students. For him lecture is an art form. He is splendid bedside teacher, conveying with wit and enthusiasm his great clinical skills without at any time relaxing his care for the patient as a person. His charm, tact, judgement and common sense makes an outstanding success of his formidable task. His grasp of subjects and cadences of the language, and the endless trouble he takes over its delivery, has long given him a good reputation as a speaker, be it a serious formal oration or a lyrical and witty after-dinner speech.

    Dr. Barmeshwar prasad's many achievements, among other physicians to the Governor of Bihar, Honorary degree from other universities, honorary fellowships from other colleges- have been enthusiastically recounted in numerous meetings. I am not a RMC graduate and was never formally taught by him. Inevitably my appreciation will be incomplete, and some of my judgements may be inaccurate. I can write only as a man who has known and admired him ever since i came to Ranchi nearly five years ago. One can be deceived by the charms, the elegance, the panache and the brilliant oratory into thinking that Dr prasad is a man who has deliberately cultivated all the talents for success, and that success and its enjoyment are his primary objectives. IT is only after one gets to know him that one realizes that the carapace of a self confidence conceals a fundamental modesty. It seems to me that, like many successful men, he is driven forward by a sense of his inadequacy. This alone is endearing but more so is the realisation that gaining fame is not, in fact, his primary objective, rather it is a basic and very personal concern for the sick, at first in Patna,later in Darbhanga and now in Ranchi. It a surprise and delight to find that such obvious public graces conceal an integrity and a simple honesty of purpose. For a number of years he has been Head of the Dept. of medicine, exposed to all the slings and arrows of inevitably unsatisfied colleagues but achieving much through selfless, quite endeavour.

He has a talent for friendship. One of his greatest pleasures is to chat with a friend over a glass of soft drink. For him civilization is conversation. If one happens to be the friend, much history, much wisdom and much humour are imbibed with the drink. He does not advertise his cultural enthusiasm, but one is liable on these occasions to find oneself discussing Georgian poetry or the Raj quartet, interest which would not have been generally suspected.

The college, the university and the profession remembers a man who, in spite of his striking public talents, has much private modesty, a man who arouses in unusual measure the loyalty, affection and respect of his colleagues, a man unique in character whose like will not readily recur, a man who has set a special pattern on a generation in medicine. To us his retirement will mean the passing of an era, an era to which all who have known it, will look back  with nostalgia, tinged indeed with pride at having known a man who has assuredly found a permanent and notable place in the medical history of Bihar.

My role model, inspiration, hero, teacher and clinician par excellence, who made me what I am today......Lucky to have done internship, junior & senior housemanship in Medicine and DTM&H under a legend like him....

He has continued to inspire me even to this day 33 years after he left us and will continue to do so till I live.

Arvind K Derhgawen

He was the most wonderful teacher we ever had. He had a rule for every student attending his Clinical Medicine class, and that was not to take any note during his class. Only listening was the prerequisite for the class. He used to pull his chair quite close to the students to talk to them in a very conversational style. Whatever he taught sounded more like a story about the normal and diseased body than a stereotype lecture, therefore, he would flow from one system to another quite effortlessly and provide a "macro"  view of the medical science with all the intricate interconnections flawlessly. Whenever some one brought some new information pertaining to medicine he would ask that person where he got it from. He used to say that he had already reached the maximum of his memory capacity and he had to take out some old info out in order to feed in some new info. Therefore, he pleaded that no one should clutter his memory with unverified stuff. We used to hear so  many stories about how much "Harrison" book he covers every day. He still is unforgettable and incomparable in short.I also remember Avinash Boss working so diligently in Prof. B. Prasad's Unit. He is, and will always be, reaping the fruits of his education, there.

I sincerely hope that "Insatiable Hunger for Power" psyche, which is the pathological basis of every politician doesn't creep into our professional or personal life, ever.

Last I forget one of Dr B. Prasad's folk lores which was in currency among the students who were quite enamored and enchanted with his personality during late 70's. One particular lore was regarding why he charges his patients highest for a consultation (60 or 65 Rs), which was quite steep during those days. He used to say that if he charges anything less how can his juniors survive in the field, therefore, he gave kind of "breathing space" to the fraternity and to him as well, to find more time to deal with the complicated and unusual cases. If the most dexterous and intelligent among doctors are inundated with a flood of trivial cases then that would amount to wastage of a rare and precious resource.

THREE GREATS IN MEDICINE . I am not that lucky to have seen them,been taught by them, but I cherish the imminent greatness of three names in the field of medicine: Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy of Kolkata, Dr. Sheetal Prasad Sinha of Darbhanga and Dr. Barmeshwar Prasad of Ranchi. Today they are legendary figures and the greatest source of motivation and inspiration to me and all others in medical profession. I bow my head to them and feel privileged to do so.

Down the memory lane: 
A patient came for consultation in his chamber. History of central chest pain etc suggestive of IHD. While I was holding his medical records in my hand professor was examining him .While still doing auscultation he asked me "it should be inferior MI. What does the ECG says Satish? Astonished me later could learn from him that that there was a cooing mitral regurgitation murmur suggestive of papillary muscle dysfunction. And as papillary muscle is generally supplied by rightt coronary which also supplies inferior surface.  Hence inferior MI possibility.


Medicine is a socio economico political relationship amongst the doctor, patient & his attendants. And not only text books of medicine- Davidsons, Harrisons, Cecil loebs, Price, and so on and so forth. It is much beyond.

 God, Father & my rev. Professor Dr Barmeshwar Prasad, almost in the same line.  Beyond words of comment.

It must be Sept or so of 1981,when we were going through our final mbbs exam.so I was not. Having direct contact with him, but certainly was under his aura as the greatest teacher,stories floating in Rmch air.iwas again lucky to be close to avinash boss enjoying several tips of clinical practice, which has shaped my present clinics.

When I was ACO , five patients expired in the night in Unit A of Prof B. Prasad. I was in the round . Imagine How our great Prof had reacted in the round nex day." Who was ACO ? Don,t worry it happens sometimes" ! I never forget words which was antithesis of my expectation. Surely, he was the best teacher of Medicine. We were lucky to be part of legend.

Although my association with him was passing,I was his intern for 3 months two vivid memories stand out which I must share in some detail. The first one occurred when I was an intern in the gynecology department. The Professor of gynae was doing some major surgery and we interns were standing at the back not particularly aware of what was going on. But we could sense there was something wrong. Soon the professor  asked her resident to call somebody who could help her out.To our utter surprise it was Barmeshwar Babu who walked in and donning gown and gloves successfully concluded the surgery. The other memory is of a National workshop on Renal Failure at the HEC hospital under the chairmanship of Dr Chugh from Chandigarh.The person who was supposed to speak on The Pathology of Renal failure failed to turn  up. Barmeshwar Babu who was sitting in the audience was persuaded to speak in his place After his lecture all that a dumbfounded Dr.Chugh could say was that he found it difficult to believe that an unprepared person could give as scholarly a lecture as that. That was Barmeshwar Babu

He was a great physician,an excellent teacher.We, his students love him,worship him.He had MI while he was getting down from the library where we had our last medicine theory paper.

It is very difficult to record the memories of a great teacher, Physician and a grat man like Prof. Barmeshwar Prasad in a few lines. From a mere formal introduction to developing a great intimacy overnight was the first great quality I found in him. When we first met about eighteen years ago it was-" kab join kiye doctor saheb?" and next morning it was- " kya hai bhonsle?". Since then till his last hours, he remained the guided spirit of my career. He always gave his ungrudging advice in all matters, not to talk of the treatment of the patients. Under his encouragement I had operated on many desperate cases and saved the lives. His shouldrs were broad enough to give support required in such cases.

I have seen many 'mahabhartas' being fought in Rajendra medical college, since its inception and seen Barmeshwar babu in different roles of recognition and even fighting for the prestige of the college, staff and students. I have seen him in the role of 'Lord Krishna' when the warring sides like pandavas and kauravas used to visit him for the advice and guidance. I have seen him charioting the Principal away from the scene, and facing the fury of the students, housemen; an d his wordswere always final. I have also seen him being abused and stuck with all sorts of venomous invectives but he always stood like Bhishma, unnerved and unscathed.

Only two days before he was struck by the cruel hands of fate, I sought his advice about a patient in sever post-operative shock. From his varandah he shouted-" Dopamine is the answer" and the patient was saved. Little did i know that the same dopamine would fail him. It requires a great courage to face doom with calm and equanimity as he did. After the cardiac pacing while I, with Prof N D Basu, was standing beside him in the X-ray department he asked me calmly-" Kaisa hua"? There was hardly a line of anguish on his forehead.

God is the supreme arbiter of life. For us badly bruised by such adversities, only little memories linger on.....

In the memory of the departed professor

Down every passage of the institution hung

An eerie silence; The sun had set-

But all the flowers in the courtyard

emitted their fragrant breaths-

which rose to the heavens to mock

at the learned doctors

who frantically made last ditch efforts

to revive their beloved friends.

The ferry tossed and rolled across the river

which ran darkly by.

On its bank stood on their appointed grounds-

The great sages, smiling and welcoming.

He had never dreamed that death can

bring so close

A man to his heart's ideals- Peace, quite and God.

But iy is unfair, dear professor,

That for us you leave behind only memories-

And a body which does not teach laugh or love,

While you rise with the essence of flowers

To rest amongst tranquility.

The life that was

Born- 1924, at Bihar- buxar

1939: passed matriculation examination in first division from Buxar high school. Admitted to Science college, Patna.

1941: Passed I.Sc. in first division. Admitted tp Prince of Wales medical college, Patna.
1947: Secured MBBS degree, second position in university.
           Honours in Physiology, Pathology, Midwifery and Opthalmology.
           Appointed as personal physician to the then Chief Minister of Bihar, Shri S K singh.
           Appointed as second medical officer at Muzaffarpur sadar Hospital

1948: Appointed as demonstrator in the Pathology department of PW medical college Patna.

1950: Set off for England on 7th September
1951: Secured his MRCP degree
1952: Secured DTMH degree.
           Returned to India.
           Appointed as tutor in the Dept of Medicine at DMCH.
1954: Got his MD degree, Promoted as lecturer.
1962: Joined RMCH, Ranchi as founder Professor of Medicine
1967: Appointed as a member of senate, Ranchi University
1969: Conferred the degree of FRCP
1970: Conferred the degree of FCCP
1981: Elected President of IMA, Ranchi branch

1981: 12th sept. - suffered to massive heart stroke at 3.00pm
           13th sept.- taken to the ICCU of HEC plant hospital, Hatia, Ranchi.
           15th sept.- Breathed his last at 6.45 PM

संक्षिप्त परिचय

नाम - Dr बरमेश्वर प्रसाद

जन्म - 1924 बक्सर,बिहार

पिता- स्व. डॉ ठाकुर प्रसाद 

1947- MBBS (5 विषयों में Hons.)

1947- बिहार के प्रथम मुख्यमंत्री श्रीकृष्ण सिंह के निजी चिकित्सक के पद पे नियुक्ति

1948- पटना मेडिकल कॉलेज में अध्यापन शुरू

1950- चिकित्सा विज्ञानं की सर्वोच्च डिग्री MRCP लेने के लिए लन्दन चले गए

1962- RMCH(अब रिम्स) की स्थापना के साथ ही मेडिसिन विभाग के संस्थापक, प्रोफेसर  और विभागाध्यक्ष बनाए गए.

अन्य- रांची विश्वविद्यालय के सीनेट के सदस्य , बिहार स्वास्थ्य संगठन के अध्यक्ष , IMA -बिहार के अध्यक्ष , बहुत सारे विश्वविद्यालयों से मानद उपाधियों के द्वारा सम्मानित.

15 सितम्बर 1981- स्वर्गवास

१५ सितम्बर - पुण्यतिथि उस चमकते सितारे की जिसने अपनी रौशनी से सिर्फ रांची या झारखण्ड-बिहार ही नहीं बल्कि पुरे चिकित्सा विज्ञान को प्रकाशित किया.स्वर्गवास के तीन दशक बाद भी डॉ. बरमेश्वर प्रसाद अपने आदर्श और  व्यक्तित्व के साथ चिकित्साविज्ञान से जुड़े हर दिल में जीवित हैं - चाहे वो rmch/रिम्स के उनके छात्र हों, सहकर्मी हों  या उनके मरीज़. जन्म से ही अत्यंत प्रतिभाशाली डॉ बी प्रसाद ने 1947 में एम् .बी.एस. की परीक्षा 5 विषयों में ऑनर्स के साथ  उतीर्ण की. उनकी प्रतिभा के कारण ही बिना हाउसमैनशीप  किये ही उनकी नियुक्ति बिहार के पहले मुख्यमंत्री डॉ. श्रीकृष्ण सिंह के निजी चिकित्सक के रूप में हुई. 1950 में MRCP की डिग्री के लिए लन्दन जाने पर वहीँ बस जाने के लिए कई प्रस्ताव उनके पास आये मगर अपनी देशभक्ति की भावना के कारण वे अपने मिटटी के करीब लौट आये और नवस्थापित RMCH के मेडिसिन विभाग के संस्थापक और विभागाध्यक्ष बने. जिस समय में भारत में आधुनिक चिकित्सा विज्ञान के अंकुर भी नहीं फूटे थे उस अन्धकार में भी डॉ. प्रसाद अपने विद्यार्थियों को जेनेटिक्स और ऐसे ही कई एकदम नयी नयी खोज की गयी चीजों के बारे में भाव-विभोर कर देने वाले लेक्चर दिया करते थे.एक बार एक जज साहब जो जर्मनी से अपने ह्रदय रोग का इलाज़ करवा रहे थे  वे डॉ प्रसाद के पास पहुंचे मगर ये देखकर आश्चर्यचकित रह गए कि यहाँ भी उन्हें वही जर्मनी वाली नयी नयी खोज की गयी दवाई  लिखी गयी जो  अब तक भारत के किसी कोने में यहाँ तक कि एम्स में भी शुरू नहीं की गयी थी. उनके  ज्ञान की कोई सीमा नहीं थी. ये कहने में जरा सा भी हर्ज़ नहीं होगा की बिहार ही नहीं पुरे बिहार-बंगाल-उड़ीसा-झारखण्ड इत्यादि क्षेत्र में चिक्त्साविज्ञान  के पौधे को अपने खून-पसीने और प्रतिभा से सींचा है उन्होंने.

कहते हैं कि उस समय rmch में आने वाले मरीजों में आधे से भी ज्यादा हिस्सा डॉ. बी प्रसाद से इलाज़ कराने के लिए आने वालों का होता था. रांची का ऐसा कौन सा घर नहीं होगा जिस घर के किसी व्यक्ति का इलाज़ उनसे नहीं कराया गया होगा. क्या मंत्री, क्या व्यवसायी, क्या ऑफिसर या कोई भी साधारण सा आदमी- सबकी एक ही कतार होती थी उनके क्लिनिक में. अपने आदर्शों के पक्के आप एक कुशल चिकित्सक के साथ साथ एक समाज सेवक, विचारक और सच्चे देशभक्त भी थे. अपनी सभ्यता और संस्कृति से उनके लगाव के बारे में बताते हुए उनके पुत्र डॉ. उमेश प्रसाद बताते हैं- "बाबूजी कभी भी हमसे अंग्रेजी में बात नहीं करते थे.उस समय रांची में अच्छे अच्छे इंग्लिश-माध्यम  स्कूल थे मगर बाबूजी ने हमारी पढाई हिंदी माध्यम के विद्यालयों में ही करवाई. उनका कहना था कि अंग्रेजी को बस भाषा के तौर पर ही पढ़ा जाना चाहिए और वो भी पुरे मेहनत के साथ मगर अपनी मातृभाषा की अवहेलना करके कदापि नहीं."उनकी लोकप्रियता के बारे में बताते हुए वे कहते हैं-" कई बार ऐसा होता था कि बाबूजी हमें फिल्म दिखाने सिनेमाघर ले जाते थे मगर बीच फिल्म में ही सिनेमाघर की बत्ती जल जाती थी, मालूम चलता था कि कुछ लोग उनकी गाडी को पहचान कर उन्हें ढूंढते हुए सिनेमाघर के अन्दर तक आ गए हैं . फिर उन्हें बीच में ही उठकर जाना पड़ता था.....".जब उनकी शवयात्रा निकली थी तो डॉक्टर्स कॉलोनी-बरियातू से  लेकर हरमू स्थित शमशान तक सड़क के दोनों तरफ हजारो-लाखों की संख्या में उनके चाहनेवाले अपनी श्रधान्जली लिए घंटो खड़े रहे थे.

मरीजों को डॉ. बी प्रसाद पे इतना भरोसा था कि कैंसर के रोगी भी जो दिल्ली-मुंबई में इलाज़ करवा के हार गए होते थे वे घंटो इनके क्लिनिक के बाहर बस इस इंतज़ार में बैठे रहते थे कि अगर एक बार वे उन्हें छू भर लें तो शायद उनकी तकलीफ ख़त्म हो जाएगी.

उनकी जिज्ञाषा की कोई सीमा नहीं थी. मेडिकल साइंस तो अपनी जगह थी ही मगर साथ साथ ही विज्ञान की अन्य शाखाओं जैसे प्लाज्मा फिजिक्स ,नुक्लियर केमिस्ट्री  एवं भूगोल , इतिहास , खेल-कूद, देश की विदेशनीति -राजनीति, अध्यात्म इत्यादि  यानी जानने लायक हर बात पे उनकी अभिरुचि हमेशा उतनी ही सजीव और संवर्धित बनी रहती थी. वे हिंदी, अंग्रेजी, संस्कृत, भोजपुरी, बंगला, उड़िया, मैथिलि  इत्यादि तो जानते ही थे मगर बाद में उन्होंने रेडिओ की मदद से मलयालम और तेलुगु भाषा भी सीखना शुरू किया था.

एक डॉक्टर के सामाजिक सरोकार और जिम्मेदारियों को वे बखूबी समझते थे. उनके अपने दर्शन और सिद्धांत आज भी हर डॉक्टर के लिए मार्गदर्शक के रूप में उपयोगी है. वे डॉक्टर और मरीज़ के बीच  के रिश्ते को सामाजिक-आर्थिक और राजनैतिक तीनो स्तर  पर स्थापित करना चाहते थे, न की सिर्फ व्यावसायिक स्तर पर. यह रिश्ता पूरी तरह मरीज़ के कल्याण को समर्पित ‘समजिविता’ का होना चाहिए. मगर मरीज़ को भी अपने दायित्व का  वहन उसी जिम्मेदारी के साथ करना चाहिए. वरना यह ‘समजिविता’ का सम्बन्ध बहुत जल्दी ही ‘परजीविता’ में बदल जाता  है जहाँ दोनों पक्षों में से किसी एक का आर्थिक-मानसिक-सामाजिक शोषण शुरू हो जाता है. सचमुच असाधारण प्रतिभा, विलक्षण सोच वाले विचारक, एक सच्चे देशभक्त, अद्वितीय शिक्षक ,अमूल्य  वैज्ञानिक और बिहार के लिए रत्न - डॉ बरमेश्वर प्रसाद जो जीते जागते किंवदन्ती से कम नहीं थे हमेशा हमेशा के लिए हम सबके प्रेरणाश्रोत बने रहेंगे.
